Cumming Dentists: Do You Have The Right Toothbrush?

The Right Toothbrush For Your

Do we always put alot of thought into choosing what kind of toothbrush we use. Well, as a general rule, I would have to say no. Most people are mainly interested in the color of toothbrush they purchase.

Many family's have a system where every member has a color that has somehow been assigned to them. This way no one uses the wrong toothbrush. This is great, but when picking out our toothbrush, we need to start thinking about what we are getting it for.

The job of a toothbrush is to reach and clean most areas of the teeth. The bristles of a toothbrush are very important when deciding on which one is the best for you. Soft bristled toothbrushes should be chosen as opposed to hard bristles which tend to cause gingival recession. Soft bristles are just more flexible and clean beneath the gingival margin without causing damage to your gums. We should also notice the size of the head of the toothbrush.

The head should be small enough to get to the hard to reach areas of the teeth. We should replace our toothbrush every 3 months or when the bristles start to wear. You should also change your toothbrush after a cold, flu, sore throat, or mouth infection. Maybe this information will help you and the health of your mouth the next time you purchase a toothbrush.

Cumming Dentists: Stress And Your Dental Health

Can Stress Affect Your Dental Health?

Are you battling stress in your life?

These days it is more like who doesn't have some sort of stress in their life. It seems that there just aren't enough hours in the day to do all that we "think" we need to get done. A recent stress in America Survey found that nearly 40 percent of adults experience wakefulness at night because of stress. Stress can have many different side affects on our bodies.

It can also have an impact on our dental health. One common side affect of stress is teeth grinding. Some people grind their teeth at night during their sleep and not even realize they are. This can cause headaches, sore jaws, or pain when biting.

Making small changes in your lifestyle can reduce stress levels. Eating healthier would be a great place to start. Until your stress becomes more managable, there is an appliance that can help with your teeth grinding. A mouth guard. It will act as a cushion for teeth when you are grinding. This will take the pressure off of your teeth which is causing your discomfort. The dentists here at Suwanee Dental Care can evaluate and determine if teeth grinding maybe the cause of your pain and discomfort. Come in today and get on your way to feeling better.

Million Dollar Smiles Are Contageous

The Smile-Makers Smiles
"Who makes the Smiles of the Smile-Makers at Suwanee Dental Care? Who does your dental work for you?"

"What kind of image do your employees display in public? Do they represent you and your business as well as you wish they did?"

These and other questions are ones that we often hear from our friends and patients. The second set of questions are ones we often ask our clients.

More than twelve years ago, I hired a young, just a year out of dental technical school graduate, Amy Perkins, to be my main dental assistant. She worked for me for five years, got married and became a Holman, had her first child, Savanna, worked for a long while until her second child, Sadie, was born. She took a few years off but recently returned as my ace dental assistant. We touched up her smile with bonding and veneers back in the first year she worked in our practice and she has been a superb ambassador for fine cosmetic dentistry ever since. She has a million dollar smile and the caring, competent chairside manner that our patients love.

Amanda Painter, our favorite Alabama Crimson Tide fan, is another of our ace dental assistants who has had a big orthodontic makeover by Dr. Jeremy Smith at Suwanee Dental Care. Her smile beams bright and lights up half of Suwanee after dark. When we need electricity, we just plug into her smile!

you visit Suwanee Dental Care, you'll also be seeing and served by Brooke, Angie, Andrea, Carol, Mistie, Jacueline and others that have had makeovers of their smiles so that they look great, feel good and represent us as Smile Ambassadors both in and out of the office. A beautiful smile can open doors and set the stage for career advancement, enhanse relationships and raise self-esteem. We are proud to have these fine women work with us on a daily basis and proud that they would serve as examples of fine dentistry to all who meet them. They do good work helping our patients, assisting our doctors and leading dual lives as wives and/or mothers and dental professionals. They are appreciated.

Brighten Your Smile With Fruits and Vegetables

Apples, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery and other crunchy fruits and vegetables can help whiten your teeth by gently scrubbing while chewing.
Fibrous fruits and vegetables are low in calories, high in nutrients, massage gingival tissue and promote blood flow that keeps tissue healthy. They also increase the flow of saliva which "washes" away plaque and bacteria.
Strawberries and oranges can help polish teeth. They contain natural enzymes that "whiten" teeth by preventing other foods and stains from adhering to teeth.
Next time you want cleaner, whiter looking teeth, and your toothbrush is not near by, grab some crunchy fruits and vegetables!

Help Raise Money for Breast Cancer

Cancer is word that none of us ever like to here. Just about everyone's life in one way or another has been affected by the disease. We may have known someone or know someone who is battling cancer and would like to do something to help them. Knowing what to do is the question. We can always pray for their healing which is very important. Another thing that we can do is to donate to a charitable foundation that raises money to fight cancer.

Suwanee Dental Care is participating in a campaign to help raise money for breast cancer. The campaign is Brighter Smiles for Brighter Futures. This campaign allows you to make a charitable donation of $199 to the Gwinnett Medical Center and receive an at home bleaching kit to whiten your teeth. The money raised during the campaign this year will be used to purchase equipment in the Gwinnett Breast Center in Lawrenceville. The Brighter Smiles for Brighter Futures has raised and given over $800,000 to the Gwinnett Medical Center since 2004. If you would like more information about how to participate in this campaign, call us at Suwanee Dental Care or go to brightersmiles.org. This is really a great way to help the fight against breast cancer.

Reasons To Stop Tobacco Use

When you think of tobacco use, what generally comes to mind? You guessed it. Smoking. Smoking is the most common use of tobacco. If you have been thinking about quitting, there are several good reasons why you should. The damage that it can do to your lungs is very great. There are also some reasons that people usually don't think of. Smoking can do alot of harm to your mouth and your teeth. The use of tobacco can lead to calculus. It can also lead to damage to bone which supports teeth. This can ultimately lead to the loss of teeth. This can be an eye opener to many people. No one wants to lose their teeth. If you think smoking looks cool, just try and imagine how cool you will look with a toothless smile.

Tobacco use can also have other effects on the mouth also. If you are a tobacco user, your ability to heal can be affected. Chemicals found in tobacco can hinder the healing process of treatment like periodontal disease or implants. Approximately 90% of oral cancer deaths are associated with smoking according to the NIDCR. Smoking isn't the only harmful form of tobacco use. Smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipes are also associated with oral and pharyngeal cancers.

Kicking the tobacco habit is not an easy thing to do. Many people need the help of their doctor. People who use tobacco have a chemical dependance for the substance. If you have had the ideal of quitting in the back of your mind, maybe the effects mentioned above will help you make the decision to stop. Help spread the word and let others know about what could happen if they continue to use tobacco.

Loyal Patient Rewards

My family recently traveled to Rome. While we were there we used some of our Loyal Patient Rewards to take a tour of the Vatican Museums in Vatican City.
It was easy to book on line! The tour was the most inexpensive one I saw checking different websites. The guide spoke English as a primary language and was extremely knowledgeable. The tour was one of the highlights of our trip. I would highly recommend booking a tour with Loyal Patient Rewards!
Does your dentist give you Loyal Patient Rewards? Suwanee Dental Care does!

mouthguards

It's the time of year when weekends are consumed with football. Friday nights are for the local high school games. On Saturdays you watch your favorite college team, and Sundays are for watching the major league teams. Not to mention the pee wee league games that your kids have on the weekend and practice during the week. This is definitely a busy time of year. Football is a fun sport that people love to watch and cheer for. Along with all of the fun, the players put in alot of hard work and do their best for their team and fans. With all of the practice and game time, the chance for injury to a players mouth is very great. According to the National Youth Sports Foundation for Safety, athletes are sixty times more likely to sustain injury to the teeth when not wearing a mouthguard for protection. There is definitely a great need for mouthguards. If your child plays any sport, not just football, you should really talk to your dentist and have a mouthguard made for your child. The Acadamy for Sports Dentistry reports that the use of faceguards and mouthguards helps prevent an estimated 200,000 injuries in high school and college football eacg year alone. Suwanee Dental Care would love to get you or your child a mouthguard that will help give you some piece of mind while out on the field.

Kids Dental Health

The time of year is here for heading back to school. Summer is coming to an end. Kids are getting back into the routine of going to bed on time and waking up for school in the morning. This is a great time to get your child started on a routine for brushing and flossing their teeth if they are not already on one. Maybe there routine has been relaxed over the summer and needs to be more regular. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing each day is very important when caring for your teeth. Encourage your child to be responsible when it comes to brushing. Also, get them on a cleaning schedule at the dentist. Every six monthes is the reccommended schedule for cleanings. Call today for your appointment to a healthier mouth.

Can Fruits and Vegetables Prevent Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is becoming something that is heard of alot more often these days. It is very important to educate yourself on ways to help prevent the disease. One simple way is to do something that we should all be doing anyway, which is eating a diet that is full of fruits and vegetables. Although it is not known what specifically in fruits and vegetables help with the prevention of oral cancer, it is known that they aid in the prevention of the disease. For example, some fruits have vitamims like C and E that have antioxidant properties which may prevent DNA damage. If this is something that is bothering you, I reccommend seeing your doctor for an examination. Most dentists also have the capability to shine a light in your mouth that would show any possible positive indications of oral cancer. At Suwanee Dental Care, this is done as a complimentary service at new patient exams and at check-up appointments for returning patients by using what is called the Velscope. Call your dentist today and remember to eat your five servings of fruits and vegetables.

What is Sleep Apnea?

There is alot of talk about sleep apnea. Some of your friends might even talk about wearing the mask hooked up to a machine at night while they sleep. You may not know what all the fuss is about. Sleep apnea is a disorder that often times goes undiagnosed because don't realized that they have the symptoms. It is a disorder that is characterized by a reduction in a person's airflow during sleep. The symptoms of sleep apnea are daytime fatigue, anxiety, irritability, and headaches. These are just a few warning signs associated with the disease. If you are concerned that you may have sleep apnea, I suggest going to your doctor and discussing this with them. There are tests that can be done that can help diagnose if you have that disorder. The subject should also be discussed with your dentist. There are several appliances that are available to help. Call Dr. Blaze Golik for an appointment today at Suwanee Dental Care.

Cold Sores

Are you one of the "lucky" ones that get cold sores? If you do, you maybe wondering what you can do to prevent from getting more in the future. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The virus most commonly enters the body through a break in the skin either around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when someone touches a cold sore or the infected fluid from a cold sore. This can happen by using an infected person's eating utensils or razors and by kissing.

The beginning signs of getting a cold sore are pain around your mouth, sore throat, swollen glands, and a fever. You may only experience one of the signs or you could experience more than one. Cold sores can be very painful for some people. Treatment includes skin creams, ointments, or pills. Your dentist can help you determine which option of treatment would be best suited for you. Cold sores usually start to heal within a few days on their own. The virus itself can't be cured though. Once you have had a cold sore, the virus will be in your system forever. To help the prevention of cold sores, avoid kissing someone with a cold sore and avoid sharing their eating utensils. Also, it is important to wash your hands often to help prevent the spreading of the virus. Hopefully, being more aware of the causes of cold sores will help you to prevent from getting cold sores in the future.

Challenge To Men

Attention all men! Recent studies have shown that women are better than men about seeing their physicians for regular checkups and seeing the doctor when they are feeling sick. New studies also show that women are more likely to visit their dentist for routine checkups. The new research indicate that women are more proactive when it comes to mantaining their oral health than men.

A study conducted at the Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences had more than 800 participants between the ages of 18 and 19 who were asked to complete questionnaires about their dental knowledge, dental attitude, and oral hygeine habits. The study revealed that women are two time as likely to have had a dental check-up in the past year. Women were also more likely to schedule the treatment recommended following the visit.

Men it is time for you to show that you do care about the overall health of your mouth. Don't let the women outshine you in this department. We now know that our oral health can also affect our overall health. Having good oral hygeine habits at home and visiting your dentist for regular cleanings can have benefits that can last you a lifetime.

Can Metal Piercings Affect Your Oral Health

If you are thinking of having your tongue pierced, you may want to ask yourself if this would affect the health of your mouth. The answer is yes. Studies have shown that oral piercings can cause a number of different problems in your mouth. Chipped, fractured, or cracked teeth are just a few that can be a result of oral piercings. Another problem that can be caused by oral piercings is gingival recession. If you are still set on having an oral piercing after reading this, it is reccommended that you get plastic jewelry instead of metal. The metal jewelry can accumulate more bacteria than the plastic jewelry according to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. The more bacteria collected causes a greater risk for infection. Oral piercings can also have orthodontic affects on your teeth also. The piercing could affect the movement of your tongue and cause your teeth to shift. Oral piercings may be the "cool thing" to do, but they can have lasting effects on your oral health and your overall health in general. You should talk to your dentist before making a decision that could affect you so much in the long run.

June Is Stroke Awareness Month

June is stroke awareness month. There are many things that we can do to improve our lifestyles that would help the prevention of strokes like eating a healthier diet and exercise. One thing that can be done that we have written about in the past is to prevent periodontal disease. Gum disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth which can lead to heart disease and strokes. Regular cleanings and home care can help to prevent gum disease. If you already have periodontal disease, there are treatments here in the office that help reverse the symptoms. You may not even know if you have gum disease. If this is the case, get to your dentist and hve him evaluate to see if you may need in office treatment. A Little Russia Comes to Suwanee

We know smiles, especially Russian Smiles. Every year Suwanee Dental Care hosts a group of Russian Girls and Boys who are part of the T.E.A.R. program that brings Russian orphans to America as part of a cultural exchange and arts program. After going through a rigorous competition back in Russia, a handful of fortunate youth from all over Russia travel throughout the USA showing their artistic talents and meeting with people on this side of the globe. T.E.A.R. is The Evangelistic Association of Russia and is a mission to the Russian people to share the Good News about Jesus Christ. Suwanee Dental Care is proud to be a sponsor of this outstanding effort to bring God into the workplace as well as into the heart of these orphans from a place far, far away.
Here is an example of the type of art that these talented youngsters produce and a story about how it all comes about.

Fantasies to Faith Art Contest

One of the many things that TEAR has done as a way to reach the orphans in Russia is to hold a Christmas Art contest for them. Each year, over 50,000 children from orphanages all across Russia participate! The top 10 winners of the contest win a trip to the United States to celebrate Christmas in the home of an American family.

The TEAR website reports that the top 150 paintings have been displayed in the Moscow Art Museum for several years. Their website also conveys that multiple orphanage directors have expressed a great improvement in the attitudes, behaviors, and even grades of the children who participate. They become motivated, experience a sense of purpose, and most importantly are in the Word of God in preparation for their project.

Each child must read the Bible for himself or herself to determine the true meaning of Christmas. They are then to create a painting and write a short essay explaining their artistic point of view of what they have learned.

The results have been astounding, to say the least.

Kenya Medical Outreach Mission Trip

The Kenya Medical Outreach is a non profit organization. It was founded by Dr. Williams, his wife Sheila, and his brother Brad. This organization takes annual trips to visit many rural villages in Kenya. They provide medical and dental care that is much needed to the Kenyan people. One project that the organization also funds is the clean water project. Over an estimated 15 million people have no access to clean water in Kenya. They are forced to drink contaminated water which is the cause of 80% of diseases. The organizations annual trip is coming up soon. There have been many wanting to know how they can help. One important way to help with this year's mission trip is to pray for the success of the trip. Another way is by financial support. For more information about how to make your donation or about this year's clean water projects visit http://www.kenyamo.com/ . Your support and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Have No Fear!

Many people may experience anxiety and trouble relaxing while receiving dental care. Suwanee Dental Care offers several options to help our patients experience dentistry minus their anxiety.

Conscious sedation has been an option for our patients for several years and is achieved by taking a pill. With this type of sedation, patients are relaxed in a twilight state during their entire dental visit. As a result, multiple treatments can be accomplished and patients are still able to be given instructions. This type of sedation is a great option for patients not wanting a deep sleep.

If you are looking to have a deeper sleep during your dental visit, Suwanee Dental Care now offers Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IV sedation). Dr. Golik is board certified with the state of Georgia for IV sedation and would be happy to speak with you about using this technique for your treatment.

No matter what your level of fear may be, we are sure to have a great option for you! We also offer laughing gas and NuCalm—a completely natural way to reach a relaxed state during your visit.

Is Invisalign For You?

Do you have teeth that need straightening or have a gap that may need closing? If you answered yes to these questions, then orthodontics may be in your future. If this is something that you have thought about and know that it would make you have the perfect smile, but the thought of having the metal braces is holding you back, we have the answer for you. Invisalign. What exactly is invisalign? It is a form of orthodontic treatment. Instead of wearing the traditional metal braces, you would wear something that is like a clear retainer. Every few weeks, based on your personalized treatment, you would come in and have your retainers or invisalign trays switched out for a new pair. At the end of your treatment you will have the smile you have always wanted without the monthes of having metal braces. This procedure is very appealing to adults. Make an appointment with your dentist to see if you would be a good candidate for invisalign.

Laser Treatment for Your Gums

In the past, gum surgery has been used to treat periodontal disease. Now, there are is a new technique offered to help fight against the disease. Just like lasik surgery is now being performed on eyes, laser treatment is being performed on the gums. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection in the gums and bone around the teeth that can lead to the loss of teeth. The laser procedure can reverse the process of periodontal disease. The procedure is alot less painful than the traditional gum surgery. Instead of cutting into the gum to get to the infection, the thin laser gets between the tooth and the gum and cleans away the infection. There are no stiches and a shorter recovery time associated with the laser treatment. This treatment is not practiced at all dental offices because it is a new procedure. Suwanee Dental Care, being up to date with the latest procedures for their patients, does use the laser treatment technique to treat periodontal disease. We would love to help get your gums healthy again.

The Truth About Root Canals

Root canal. Just hearing those two words make most people have an awful feeling. People tend to for some reason associate bad things with root canals even if they have never experienced having one themselves. Understanding the need and process of a root canal can help relieve some of the anxiety that go along with hearing the words. The number one thing that most people are afraid of is that the procedure will hurt. The truth is that the most pain you will feel is getting the anesthetic in the beginning of the procedure. You shouldn't feel anything else because the anesthetic will make you numb in the area. Most root canal procedures can be completed in one to two visits. After having a root canal, it is very important to schedule to have your tooth permanently restored. Having the crown will help protect your tooth from fracturing in the future. I hope knowing a little about the process will make you feel more at ease if you are ever told that you need a root canal.

Halitosis

Are you afraid of your breath? Bad breath or Halitosis is caused by bacteria. This bacteria can be contributing to tooth decay or periodontal disease. The gaseous bacteria can accumulate under poor fitting dentures or partials, in between your natural teeth or on your tongue. Talk to your dentist or hygienist. They can demonstrate proper brushing and flossing and suggest oral rinses or sprays that can eliminate "VSC" or Volatile Sulfur Compounds.
Certain health conditions and medications can contribute to dry mouth which can also cause halitosis. Stay hydrated by drinking water which will also help wash away any bacteria.

Dental Implants Save Face

Reproducing the natural look, normal feel and function of your lost teeth may seem difficult to achieve. At Suwanee Dental Care, many people have come to us because they sensed from their own dentists that this was the case. What they were pleased to find out was that there are good alternatives for almost every type of situation that can be successful.

Photo: Dr. Bill Williams visits with Dr. Matt Milner, one of the Kenya Mission Alumni and also a resident of the LSU Implant Prosthodontic Program in New Orleans at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry annual session in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dental implants are ideal for replacing missing teeth that have been lost due to dental caries or to periodontal disease. In many cases, the bone can be regenerated and an implant placed in its ideal location to maintain the health and beauty of the mouth. The problem with missing teeth is that it can be detrimental to your body’s overall general health as well as to the structures inside your mouth. It’s a well known fact that tooth loss leads to being a dental cripple with one tenth the biting power and ten times the facial wrinkles compared to people who have their own teeth….or dental implants.

Just as atrophy occurs with muscle disuse, so atrophy occurs in the jaw bones as teeth are lost. Excessive atrophy leads to excessive aging and weakness of the jaw and facial muscles. One of our goals at Suwanee Dental Care is to educate the patients we have to not lose teeth, to not allow missing teeth to remain in that detrimental state for long and to replace those that are missing with the best available option, bone-saving and bone-stimulating dental implants (as opposed to dental bridges, partial or full dentures). While those options are better than nothing (toothlessness), they pale in comparison to dental implants for longevity, function, and, most of all, the ability to preserve bone. For those who are missing teeth, dental implants are the absolute superior way to replace them. There is no bridge that is as good as a good dental implant for restoring a single tooth. The successful dental implant, over a lifetime, will be much less expensive to place and maintain than the average dental bridge or partial denture, too. Many people will look at the initially higher cost of a dental implant, abutment and crown on that implant and consider it too expensive compared to a dental bridge or partial denture. This is actually shortsighted because the complications and remakes of traditional bridges and partials are much higher over time. And, when bridges and partial dentures have to be remade every ten years or so, and when the implant is still functional after the same time span, the cost of the implant begins to look like a total bargain.

Dental implants have been around for over 50 years as a common part of the dental list of options for patients. While not too many dentists placed them in the early days and many implant systems have been come and gone, what is now used in dental implants by the highly trained dentists such as those at Suwanee Dental Care, are extremely reliable and have a highly favorable track record. Because of this fact, dental implants as an option for our patients, have risen from the bottom of the list in 1975 to the top of the list of options in 2011. We place them confidently and often and can say that they are well tolerated and enjoyed by hundreds of our patients. In fact you have probably met several of our team who have dental implants in their own mouths…Angie our treatment coordinator and myself! I had a dental implant placed to replace a missing permanent tooth in 1986 and it’s as good today as it was back then…perfect in form, function and comfort to this very day.

Hidden Dangers of Sleep Apnea

We all know someone that snores. If they keep us up at night, we often give them a hard time about it. Snoring is something that they can't help and really don't know that they are doing it. Snoring can be a sign of a serious health issue called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing during sleep. Each time the stops breathing during sleep, apnea, the amount of oxygen intake is decreased. This causes the brain to send a signal to the rouse the body in an effort to start breathing again. This causes a low quality of sleep which causes daytime fatigue and irritability. If left untreated, sleep apnea may lead to high blood pressure, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Often people aren't aware that their dentist may be able to help with this problem. Yes, Your dentist! Your dentist may be able to provide treatment for sleep apnea through the use of oral appliances. If this sounds like it may benefit you or someone that you know, call your dentist office today and set up an appointment. Begin to enjoy a good night's sleep again.

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer is a word that many people just do not want to hear. It is a terrible disease that affects so many different people. Young or old it doesn't matter. Cancer is real and almost everyone's life has been touched by this disease in some way or another. Early detection of this disease could be a life saver. We have mammograms, pap smears, and prostate screenings to detect certain kinds of cancer. Another type of cancer that we have a screening for now is for oral cancer. A majority of oral cancer cases aren't discovered until the later stages because most cancer lesions can't be seen during traditional screenings. A screening here at Suwanee Dental Care with our Velscope will help to detect any cancer lesions that are present. This screening will allow us to detect any lesions that may be in the early stages and favoring a higher survival rate.

The month of April is National Oral Cancer Awareness month. Suwanee Dental Care is offering our oral cancer screening with the Velscope at half price. We think this is a very important screening to have. We would love for any one, patient or not, to call and schedule an appointment for this screen. Please make all of your friends aware of this and just how important a simple screening could be.

Broken Braces or Wire

For someone in active traditional orthodontics, a broken appliance or poking wire can become a dental emergency.

If the broken piece can be easily removed, go ahead and take it out, to avoid the potential swallowing or choking. A sharp or protruding wire can be covered with orthodontic wax, chewing gum or gauze.

A wire that is stuck in soft tissue; like the cheek, gums or tongue, requires immediate dental treatment. Do not try to remove.

Broken wires or appliances not bothering someone usually can wait until the next orthodontic exam. When in doubt, call the office.

Liquid Smile

Liquid Smile Professional Whitening Pen

Liquid Smile - 12% Hydrogen Peroxide Tooth Whitening Pen, 30 Applications

Liquid Smile Professional Whitening Pen is a new way to "paint" on tooth whitener and whiten your smile in one hour.
1 Hour whitening can achieve up to a 10 shade improvement.
Liquid Smile Whitening Pen has all the benefits of whitening and is very convenient.
It is simple to use. It takes 30 seconds to apply.

No messy, uncomfortable trays or strips. Liquid Smile is more effective than any strips (Strips are hard to position correctly, do not cover crooked, uneven or large teeth properly, must be used for up to 4 weeks and can result in uneven whitening).
No gagging, spitting and bulky trays that prevent you from talking.

Directions are for NIGHT use. Brush and floss your teeth. Dry your teeth with a tissue or soft cloth. Using a mirror, paint a thin layer on the front tooth surfaces you want covered. Wait 30 seconds, relax your lips and go to sleep!
Whitening at night is best because the saliva flow is decreased and the gel will stay on your teeth better, working at full concentration bubbling away stain fast.

If you have sensitivity, we can help you at Suwanee Dental Care. Our hygienists use polish called NuPro that can aid in the transmission of pain to the nerve of your teeth. We also have a variety of prescription toothpastes with fluoride you can purchase to help. Call our office at 770-614-7300 and let us know you would like help with your sensitive teeth!

Does Having Your Wisdom Teeth Make You Wiser?

The old saying that we have all heard is that if you have your wisdom teeth, you are a wise person. Let's talk about if this is true or maybe just a funny little saying. Your wisdom teeth are considered to be your third molars. Some are born without them. Most dentists reccommend that if you have your third molars, you should have them evaluated to see if they are doing more harm than good. The extraction of your third molars maybe discussed to protect the overall health of your mouth. Extraction is usually reccommended when the wisdom teeth are only partially erupt. Wisdom teeth that are partially erupt leave an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. Wisdom teeth that ar impacted are generally reccommended for extraction also. Impacted wisdom teeth can continue to grow without enough room causing movement of the adjacent teeth. Extractions can be performed by your general dentist or if you are in need of a dentist, we here at Suwanee Dental Care would love to welcome you as a patient. Our dentists will evaluate and help you decide if this is a route you should take.

Make Dental Health Fun for Kids

Is it a chore to get your kid's to brush their teeth? Every morning and night should not begin with, "Oh, mom. Do I have to?" February is children's dental health month. It is the perfect time to talk about how important their dental health is and try to make it fun at the same time. One idea is to do a toothbrush painting. Have your child use their old toothbrush to paint a fun picture and then take a trip to buy a new one. Let your child pick out what color they would like to make them feel special and a toothpaste that will hopefully get them excited about brushing. This will allow you the perfect opportunity to talk about how important brushing your teeth can be and the effects of not brushing your teeth. Communication can open all kinds of doors with your child. Help get them excited!

Children's Dental Health Month

February is Children's Dental Health Month.
The concept of the Registered Dental Hygienist was to create a "School Dental Nurse" to prevent childhood dental problems. The Dental Hygienist, employed in the schools, would do a dental exam and cleaning, provide a fluoride treatment and teach basic home dental care.
Alfred Fones was the Dentist that created this unique profession. Some states in the Northeast still employ Hygienists in the school system.
Show your children how much you love them by taking them to see a Registered Dental Hygienist.

New Year's Resolutions

It is the start of a new year. Many look at this time of year as a fresh start or a new beginning. A lot of people make "new year's resolutions" for things they would like to accomplish during the upcoming year. Many start a new diet, others exercise more, and some spend more time with family. There are so many things that we could do for ourselves in the new year. Have you thought about the oral health of you and your family this year. This is a great time of year to find a dentist. Simple dental health routines like visiting the dentist twice a year for exams and cleanings can help people minimize their risk for things such as periodontal disease. Some things that can be done at home are brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. This will be a resolution that will benefit you for years to come.

Hate to floss

We have a simple dental philosophy: Only floss the teeth you want to keep.

For those that hate to floss and are just not going to; we have other methods. There are disposable flossers and flossing handles that will let you floss without having to wrap the floss around your fingers. Toothpicks and soft piks can also clean between your teeth when used appropriately. An electric, rotary, toothbrush called Rotadent has been proven to be an electric flosser. Independent research shows that it can get below the gum line and in between the teeth up to 3 mm when angled correctly. This is the same thing that proper flossing does.

The goal of flossing is to remove loosely attached plaque and bacteria from between the teeth. This helps to prevent decay and gum disease.

If you are just not going to floss, let's find something you will do.

We want you to keep all your teeth for a lifetime!

Make your Christmas Bright

The Christmas season is here and the parties begin! It is a very fun and festive time. Getting together with loved ones and friends that we may not see other times of the year. We love to laugh and smile. If you may feel self concious about your smile because your teeth may not be as white as you would like them to be, we here at Suwanee Dental Care can help you with that. We offer several different types of teeth whitening. If you are looking for a quick change in the color of your smile, we have in-office whitening. You would come into the office and have three sessions of whitening or bleaching and leave with a brighter smile than you came in with. If you do not have time to come into the office, we also offer home whitening kits. The end results can be the same. It just takes a little longer to ger there. You would receive bleaching trays and the bleach to reach your goal. Another option is an at home bleaching pen that you would brush on your teeth at night. There are several options available to help you get the smile you want. Call us here at Suwanee Dental Care and we can help you decide which would be the best option for you. Your friends and family will notice a difference in your smile.

Special Toothpaste

Toothpaste is big business. There is a toothpaste for whitening and brightening, tartar and stain, sensitivity, children, and now, enamel-saving.
What do we really need?
The most important ingredient in commercial over the counter toothpaste is fluoride.
Some people are sensitive to extra added ingredients. The simpler the toothpaste the less chance of irritation.
If your dentist determines you need enamel saving, a prescription toothpaste with calcium and phosphate alone or calcium phosphate and extra fluoride will be dispensed.
Ask your dental professional what you really need.

Childhood Cavities are Chronic Disease

Did you realize that tooth decay is the most common childhood chronic disease in the USA? Cavities affect one in four between ages 2 and 5 and half of kids ages 12 to 15.
Prevention is the best line of defense.
Brush at least two times a day with a fluoridated toothpaste when your child can spit. Children under 4 to 5 years may tend to swallow toothpaste so they should use a non fluoridated toothpaste.
Floss one time a day. Disposable flossers in different animal shapes and bright primary colors can make this easy.
Children should visit the dentist twice yearly for preventative cleanings and fluoride treatments starting at the age of three.
Seal the permanent teeth as soon as they erupt.
These simple stratagies can make your child a lifetime member of the "No Cavity Club".

Gum Disease

Has it been a while since you have visited your dentist? The information I am about to describe to you may get you in to see him pretty quick. In recent studies, it has been discovered that gum disease in the United States may be a great deal higher than previously estimated. Research published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) shows that the occurance of gum disease may have been underestimated by about 50 per cent.
You may be wandering, why should I be alarmed by this news and exactly what is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is chronic inflammation that affects the gums and other structures that support the teeth. It can lead to the loss of teeth if left untreated. Periodontal disease can also be associated with other diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The best way to determine if you may have periodontal disease is to have a soft tissue examination performed by your dentist. Here at Suwanee Dental Care we are thorough in our examinations. If the dentist finds that you have periodontal disease as a result of your examination, there is hope. There is treatment that can be done to help fight against gum disease. Some signs that you can look for on your own are bleeding gums when flossing or bad breath. If you feel that you may have periodontal disease, please don't wait any longer. Your life could be depending on it.

Skipping Mouth to Mouth Saves Lives

CPR chest compressions only, save more lives then traditional mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions, a new study published in Journal of the American Medical Association shows.
Traditional CPR with mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions is still the prefered method for small children, near drowning and drug overdose victims, instances where lack of breathing caused collapse.

Are Dental Implants Right For You?

Are you embarrassed by your smile or avoid smiling all together because of a missing tooth in your mouth or a denture that slips? You may not be as social as you would like to be. There is a solution to your problem that will give you your smile back. Dental implants may be the answer you have been looking for. Dental implants may make it possible for you to eat and smile again with confidence.
The spaces you have in your mouth may be from teeth that were lost, removed, or simply never grew in. There are other options besides dental implants to fill the space like bridges. These aren't always the best solution though. In order for a bridge to fit, the structure of the surrounding teeth have to be sacrificed. Dental implants use another method. The surrounding teeth aren't touched. Dental implants anchor prosthetic, or artificial, teeth into your jawbone to provide a secure fit. Whether you are missing one or several teeth, dental implants are a great option.
If dental implants sound like something you would be interested in, give us a call here at Suwanee Dental Care. Dr. Williams or Dr. Golik can discuss a treatment plan with you that will best suit your needs after an evaluation is done. We want to help you feel good about your smile again.

Halloween Candy

No, I am not one of those houses that gives out toothbrushes. Candy is not the cause of cavities. Diet is.
Every time you put something into your mouth, the PH becomes lower, more acidic, to help break down food. This is part of the digestive process along with chewing. It is a combination of how frequently we eat and drink along with what we eat and drink.
The worst culprit, soda. Even sugar free or diet soda. Soda has phosphoric acid to create bubbles. Lighter or citrus flavor sodas also have citric acid. We use citric acid in dentistry to roughen tooth surfaces to bond filling material.
Sports drinks are also very acidic and cause problems when sipped on over a long period of time. Water is the best to rehydrate.
Cookies, chips and pretzels are long chains of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are sugar. When cookies, chips and pretzels get wet with saliva they get sticky and stay in the grooves of the teeth.
Chocolate, within moderation, is actually a better snack. The fat in chocolate make the tooth slick so it does not stick to it.
We hand out chocolate for trick or treats!

9.24.2010

Chewing Gum Prevents Cavities

Those four out of five dentists are correct. Chewing gum helps saliva to flow and wash away bacteria that cause decay. Sugar free gum with xylitol also helps reduce bacteria count.
So go ahead and chew sugar free gum!

New Patient Experience

Here at Suwanee Dental Care, we try to make your dental experience one like no other. We begin a new patient appointment by giving a tour of the office. It is very nice and comforting to see where you are going to be taken care of. This is also a great opportunity to ask questions about the facility if you have any. After the tour, the doctor and the dental assistant talk with the patient to get to know about each other. The main concerns of the patient are also addressed at this time. This time spent with the patient seems to give them a since of comfort instead of just going straight to the dental chair and beginning the exam. We want to make our patients feel as comfortable as they can be. After meeting with the doctor, then we begin a very thorough evaluation of the patients teeth and oral health. The next appointment our patients typically have is with our treatment coordinator. This is when the patient will go over the treatment proposal that the doctor has put together for him/her. The patient is given the opportunity to decide what to do on the treatment plan and when it is best for their schedule. We would love to make Suwanee Dental Care your new dental home.
