Broken Braces or Wire

For someone in active traditional orthodontics, a broken appliance or poking wire can become a dental emergency.

If the broken piece can be easily removed, go ahead and take it out, to avoid the potential swallowing or choking. A sharp or protruding wire can be covered with orthodontic wax, chewing gum or gauze.

A wire that is stuck in soft tissue; like the cheek, gums or tongue, requires immediate dental treatment. Do not try to remove.

Broken wires or appliances not bothering someone usually can wait until the next orthodontic exam. When in doubt, call the office.

Great article! It is so important to know what to do in an emergency situation, especially with children. My son’s dentist has some more great tips on his website. I have listed a link below!
